We all know that teens spend a lot of time on social media, for many it seems that their mobile phones are permanently glued to their hands.
The good news is that there is an incredible amount of useful and inspiring yoga related material circulating on social media, and it can actually be a tool for encouraging teens to practice yoga. Since they’re spending so much time online already, why not make it a more inspiring experience, and hopefully encourage them to put down the phone and get on the yoga mat!
There are hundreds of yogis on Instagram from all over the world! They post awesome pictures of beautiful poses, and often equally beautiful scenery. There are also constant yoga challenges taking place on Instagram where everyone posts a picture of them doing the daily pose with the challenge hashtag. All you need to do to get involved is type “yoga” in the search bar and get following!
Pinterest was developed to be a virtual inspiration board, and has become a huge platform for all kinds of fitness material. The yoga community has a great presence on Pinterest as well, and you’ll find everything from pose guides to inspirational quotes, and even short yoga videos. It’s a great way to learn more about specific poses and find new sequences to practice.
Facebook and twitter also have a lot of great material for yogis. Following local yoga studios on Facebook is a great way to stay involved and get nice reminders about upcoming classes. Twitter is like a running list of everything having to do with yoga, from retreats to sales on yoga gear, it’s all there under the #yoga hashtag.
Social media is making it possible to connect with people all over the world, share ideas, and create inspired communities. It’s a wonderful thing for the yoga community, and especially for those who are new to the practice to learn from the experts! For teens, it’s a way to turn all that screen time into a positive experience, and encourages them to get involved in a way that they connect with to improve their practice.
