For the past few weeks, I have been tagging along to Veronika’s yoga classes at a Secondary School in Kilburn. After each class, I sat down with some of the teen girls to talk about their experience.
The girls had some beautiful insight into how to use their yoga and mindfulness practice to help deal with the stress of life, boys, and each other. Here are a few of my favourite quotes:
Yoga is about being at one with yourself more than just focusing on others and your surroundings. I’ve learned that when you focus on your breathing, everything just goes out of your mind.
I used to get worked up easily, but now I just breathe.
You can’t inherit respect, respect has to be earned.
Yoga is the best therapy you can ever have!
You feel a lot more calm, something you don’t do a lot because you’re always moving, you’re always thinking and you never take a second to experience things as it happening, and I think that was good, to be in touch with your body and everything that’s going on.
It’s made me appreciate my body, even though I may not be perfect in my eyes… It’s made come to terms with that.
I’ll stop, breath and relax, at the end of the day, things will happen and life will go on. If I get stressed out, I can’t change what happens, so I’ve learned to just forget about things.
Don’t stress about things you can’t change.
After talking with the girls, I was reminded that while we may be in a teaching role when working with teens, we always have something to learn from them as well. I was blown away by how mature and receptive the girls were. I left feeling inspired and encouraged by their willingness to accept yoga and mindfulness as useful tools for their lives.
